WINTER STORM WARNING: 9 Inch Snowfall Forecast for Arlington Heights, Nearby Northwest Suburbs from Saturday 4PM to Sunday 5PM

A NWS Winter Storm Warning activated Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 11:45 a.m. is in effect from 3:00 p.m. Saturday January 30, 2021 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2021.

Confidence is high that areas in Chicagoland will experience snowfall amounts greater than 8 inches. The northwest suburbs are once again in the area of deepest snow accumulation expectations.




Low pressure with counterclockwise spin over southeast Colorado and Kansas is drawing airflow from east to west and is associated with winds of about 17 MPH and gusts to 24 MPH from the southeast around noon. Winds will start to pickup about 1:00 p.m. with a steady southeast wind of 22 MPH and gusts to 32 MPH by 6:00 p.m. Gusts over 25 MPH will continue until about 9:00 p.m. Sunday when winds will be from the northeast. Southeast winds Saturday will shift from the east by midnight Saturday/Sunday and from the northeast by 10:00 a.m. Sunday.

Forecasters expect about 5 inches of snow accumulation by midnight Saturday/Sunday when the most intense snowfall at almost 1 inch/per hour will likely fall between 5:00 p.m. and midnight. First snowflakes will appear between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Snowfall intensity will drop off significantly by about 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2021. Snow flurries may continue until about 5:00 a.m. Monday.




Areas far west and south of the northwest suburbs (well south and west of DeKalb and Joliet) will see mixed precipitation, including rain, freezing rain and sleet. DeKalb and Joliet will see mixed precipitation before heavy snowfall.

Weather Radar shows precipitation moving eastward south of I-80 and east of the Lake Michigan – Chicagoland shoreline. Precipitation echoes south of I-80 and south of Peoria and Decatur are building rapidly at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2021

Sunday: Snow. Patchy blowing snow between 9am and 10am. High near 34. Breezy, with a north northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Sunday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 27. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
