SUSPECT SHOT BY POLICE AFTER HE SHOT WOMAN AT EVANSTON IHOP

Police from Evanston responded about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2020 to a report of a man with a gun at the CVS Pharmacy at 101 Asbury Avenue in Evanston. The suspect ran across the street into the IHOP, where he took a lady hostage and shot her — critically wounding her.

The male suspect ran out of the store and headed eastbound on Howard Street where he was confronted by Evanston and Chicago police officers. He was shot as he was confronted by police in the Dollar General store parking lot. Police recovered the suspect’s gun.

Chicago police are investigating whether the suspect was involved in shootings of three victims in Chicago earlier in the day on Saturday.

About 2:15 p.m. two women were shot in a vestibule at the Barclay Apartments at 4940 South East End Avenue. One woman was struck in the face, and one woman was struck in the chest. One of the women died.

About 5:10 p.m. man was found shot dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the Regents Park Apartment Complex, 5025 South East Avenue. The man was a student at the University of Chicago.

Both incidents occurred in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago — north of the Hyde Park neighborhood and near the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Initially, no details about any possible connections were released by police.
