Police and firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 5:19 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020 to a report of smoke in the CTA Red Line subway at 1167 South State Street in Chicago. Firefighters staged at 11th Street and State Street with a Still and Box response. The fire was actually discovered in rubbish as 15 Street and Clark Street.

Firefighters on arrival reported smoke in the subway about 5:24 p.m.

Electricity to the railway was shut off from Grand Avenue to 27th Street on the southbound side, and Grand Avenue to 13th Street on the northbound side while firefighters were in the tunnel investigating the smoke and extinguishing the fire.

At 5:45 p.m. firefighters also responded to a report of a train failure at 138 West Cermak Road. The CTA train was stalled at about 23rd Street.

Fire command reported smoke conditions were improving in the subway by about 5:47 p.m. and the source of the smoke was discovered to be a rubbish fire at 15th Street and Clark Street. The fire was nearly extinguished about 6:00 p.m. The Still and Box was struck out at about 6:01 p.m. Fire command reported that all firefighters were picking up from 1167 South State, but some personnel remained at 15th and Clark Street.

Firefighters believed that when they restored the power that was shut off to investigate and extinguish the rubbish fire at 15th Street and Clark Street that the train near Cermak and 23rd Street would start moving. No passengers on the stalled train required any medical assistance. Firefighters held off on evacuating the train with hope that the power restoration would activate the disable train.

At about 6:12 p.m. firefighters learned that the CTA could not restore the power, and evacuation of the CTA train was required.
