Second Suspect Arrested Connected to Homicide of Elliot Jones in Unincorporated Gurnee, May 2020

Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives have continued investigating a homicide case connected to the May 29, 2020 shooting death of Elliot Jones in the block of 36900 North Grandwood Drive in unincorporated Gurnee.

On June 8, 2020, suspect Donterrance M. Nixon, 22, of the block of 600 Lenox Avenue, Waukegan was arrested as a person of interest in the shooting death of Elliot Jones. With evidence gathered in early June 2020, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of first degree murder for Donterrance M. Nixon, for his involvement in the murder.




During the ongoing homicide investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s detectives developed information and evidence indicating Jordae Wilson, 19, of the block of 2500 Jackson Street, Waukegan, was closely involved in the robbery and murder of Elliot Jones. In the evening of May 29, 2020, Wilson and Donterrance M. Nixon planned to rob Jones. Nixon and Wilson arranged a meeting with Jones. During the meeting they robbed Jones, and during the robbery Jones was shot by an occupant of their vehicle.

On September 24, 2020, sheriff’s detectives presented the evidence to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and an arrest warrant for first degree murder was drafted for Wilson. A Lake County Judge authorized and signed the arrest warrant.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team developed information that Wilson was hiding in the Atlanta, GA area, and was not immediately located. On November 22, 2020, Wilson was driving a vehicle which was pulled over by Kenosha Police Department. He was taken into custody and also found to be in possession of a firearm.




Wilson currently remains held at the Kenosha County Jail pending extradition hearings.

On May 29, 2020, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive, unincorporated Gurnee, for a report of a man shot. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and located a 21-year-old man, of the 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive, who sustained a gunshot wound.

The victim was unresponsive, and sheriff’s deputies attempted lifesaving efforts on him. Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.




Preliminary investigation showed the victim met with another person near the roadway, close to the victim’s residence. The person that met the victim then shot the victim. The offender fled from the scene following the shooting. It was determined the victim was likely acquainted with the offender and that the shooting death was not a random act.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to Advocate Condell Medical Center and began the process of scheduling an autopsy on the victim.

On June 8, 2020, suspect Donterrance M. Nixon was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Elliot Jones. During the investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives identified Donterrance M. Nixon, 22, of the 600 block of Lenox Avenue, Waukegan, as a person of interest.




The investigation revealed Nixon was an acquaintance of Jones. On May 29, 2020, Nixon and Jones spent some time together during the day. The two went their separate ways in the evening but continued communicating via electronic message. Nixon offered to sell Jones marijuana, but really intended on robbing Jones.

At approximately 9:50 p.m., Nixon arrived at Jones’ residence and Jones walked to the vehicle where Nixon was seated. Nixon robbed Jones of the cash he was going to use to buy the marijuana. The driver of the vehicle began to drive away as Jones was attempting to open the car door, in an effort to retrieve his stolen money. An occupant in the vehicle then shot Jones.

Nixon, who planned and committed the robbery was arrested by Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives on June 8, 2020, at approximately 6:00 p.m. He had an active arrest warrant for violating his sexual offender registry requirements, and was arrested during a traffic stop at the intersection of Northfield Avenue and North McAree Road, Waukegan.

After presenting the facts and evidence, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of first degree murder for Nixon, for his involvement in the murder.
