Woman Shot Accidentally in Community Garden

Police and firefighter/paramedics from North Chicago responded about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2020 to a report that two people were shot in the block of 2000 Greenfield Avenue in North Chicago.

Police on arrival discovered an 18-year-old male shot in the head and unresponsive, and a 77-year-old female shot in the leg.

The 18-year-old male victim was dead at the scene.

The 77-year-old woman, who was gardening nearby in the North Chicago Community Garden, was shot in her leg by a stray bullet. She was transported to a local hospital with a wound that was initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

The initial police investigation indicates that the male shooter arrived in a vehicle about 7:15 p.m. on Greenfield Avenue near 20th Street in a residential neighborhood. He exited the vehicle and shot the teen in the roadway, according to the Lake County Major Crimes Taskforce.

The identity of the 18-year-old victim was not initially released.

Police did not initially release a description of the offender’s vehicle.
