A sheriff’s office official said Michael Forest Reinoehl had been under surveillance as a suspect in the fatal shooting of a supporter of the Patriot Prayer group in Portland.

Male suspect, Michael Reinoehl — suspected of fatally shooting Aaron Danielson, a Trump supporter involved with the conservative group Patriot Prayer counter-protest in Portland last Saturday — was killed just before 7:00 p.m. PT Thursday, September 3, 2020 in the block of 7600 3rd Way SE in unincorporated Thurston County near Lacey, Washington.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office reports that “a homicide suspect” came out of an apartment and entered a vehicle to attempt to leave. Shots were fired by law enforcement at the suspect inside the vehicle. The fled the vehicle on foot, and shots were fired again at the suspect, who collapsed and died at the scene.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office reported the suspect was armed with a handgun. No members of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office were present at the time of the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lacey, Washington is about 100 miles north of Portland, Oregon and just southwest of Tacoma, Washington.

Suspect Michael Reinoehl, 48, was killed as a local task force with federal officers present attempted to apprehend him in an unincorporated area near Lacey, Washington, according to law enforcement officials. Reinoehl was initially a “person of interest” and then the prime suspect in the killing of Aaron “Jay” Danielson, age 39. Danielson was shot in the chest last Saturday night in Portland.

Federal agents from the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service and members of the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force had located Reinoehl during daylight hours Thursday, September 3, 2020 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Reinoehl displayed a gun while engaged with FBI and U.S. Marshals personnel and task force personnel, and was shot by a law enforcement officer who was working side-by-side with the federal task force.

U.S. Marshals were present but were not the officers who killed Reinoehl, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Department. Other personnel involved in the task force were the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the Lakewood Police Department and the Washington Department of Corrections.

An Oregon Public Broadcasting report stated that members of the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force were waiting outside an apartment where they believe Reinoehl was staying when he tried to enter a vehicle and he was shot.

Cellphone video captured a law enforcement officer administering CPR near the curb of a street behind a pickup truck after Reinoehl was shot.

Oregon Public Broadcast, describing Reinoehl as a Racial Justice Protester and a self-described anti-fascist snowboarder, also reported he was arrested about 2:10 a.m. July 5, 2020 after he was accused of possession of a handgun at a downtown protest, resisting arrest, and interfering with a police officer.

Reinoehl had also described himself in a social media post as “100% ANTIFA” and regularly attended anti-racism demonstrations in Portland.

Reinoehl as killed shortly after he was interviewed by cable network Vice News. Reinoehl was interviewed by Vice earlier on Thursday, September 3, 2020 and described the shooting of Aaron “Jay” Danielson as self-defense against, claiming right-wing protesters were about to stab one of his friends.

In an exclusive interview with VICE News, Michael Reinoehl, who has been linked to a killing at a Portland protest, said he believed he and a friend were about to be stabbed, and that he acted in self defense.

On July 26, 2020 Reinoehl was shot near his elbow after he got involved in an already existing scuffle between an armed white man and a group of young people of color. The man who was carrying the gun, Aaron Scott Collins, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he and a friend had just left a bar when they saw the group harassing an older Black man. His friend began filming them with a phone, and the group confronted them, calling them Nazis, he said. The encounter was reported by OREGONLIVE.

Oregon Public Broadcasting investigated Reinoehl and discovered a significant criminal history.
