Police said someone in one vehicle sprayed bullets into another at 47th Street and Union Avenue, also wounding two adults. CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reports.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 5:55 p.m. Monday September 7, 2020 to a report that a child was shot, and at least two other people were shot at 47th Street and Union Avenue. At least 15 or 16 rounds were fired, and 15 or 16 shots were detected by ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, which brought an immediate dispatch of police to the scene at the same time residents started calling 9-1-1.

Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find a grayish blue Subaru up the curb and crashed into a tree, and a girl laying in the street among at least two other gunshot victims.

LIVE TRAFFIC MAP …

An 8 year-old female/black was transported with life-threatening injuries to Level 1 Trauma Center Comer Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An adult male and an adult female were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center University of Chicago with life-threatening injuries, and the victims mother, a 30-year-old woman, was transported to University of Chicago, where she was listed in good condition. Initially police did not know if the victim’s mother was injured from being shot or from injuries suffered in the crash. Later it was discovered that the 30 year-old female suffered injuries from the crash, and was not shot. There were four occupants in the victims’ vehicle when the shots were fired — one child and three adults.

Initial investigation indicates the victims’ vehicle was stopped facing northbound on Union Avenue at a red light at 47th Street, and the suspects’ vehicle was directly behind the victim’s vehicle. When the light turned green, shots were fired into the victims’ vehicle. The victim’s vehicle continued northbound on Union, went over the curb, and crashed into a tree. The victims’ vehicle struck another car before crashing into the tree. The other vehicle, otherwise unrelated to the incident, was a small white hatchback or SUV — possibly a Ford Escape.

Police said the suspect(s)’ vehicle is believed to be a newer model black Dodge Charger with tinted windows and dark charcoal-colored wheels. The suspects eventually fled southbound on Union Avenue at a high rate of speed. Police indicated the victims were targeted. The suspect(s) possibly initially went northbound and then southbound on Union. There was also an initial incorrect report that the suspect(s)’ vehicle was an orange Dodge Charger that was driven northbound in an alley.

The shooter was described as a male black subject. Initially no suspects were in custody. Area One detectives are investigating.

The crime scene was still active with investigation at 10:00 p.m. The crime scene was located just west of the the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) in the Canaryville neighborhood.
