Police and firefighter/paramedics from Wauconda responded about 3:01 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2020 to a report of a crash with injuries at South Rand Road and Liberty Street in Wauconda.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival discovered a head-on crash involving a box truck and a white passenger vehicle (a Mitsubishi Eclipse) with severe damage south of Liberty Street (Route 176). The crash was located just south of the exit ramp from US 12 West/IL-59 (northbound) to Liberty Street with vehicles and debris spread as far as about 520 South Rand Road where Midwest Tree Service is located.

Wauconda Fire District Battalion 34 on arrival reported seeing a large box truck in the middle of the northbound lanes, but initially that was all he could see at the scene. The other vehicle involved in a crash was located off the right shoulder further south of the box truck. The vehicles were separated by about 400 feet.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Eclipse was ejected to the roadway between the two vehicles, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi Eclipse was a 21 year-old male. His identity was not initially released. The driver of the box truck was treated at the scene, and refused ambulance transport to a hospital.

Several emergency vehicles needed to arrive the wrong way on the US 12 West (northbound) exit ramp, as traffic on US 12 West (northbound) was congested south of the crash scene.

Crash Scene during investigation about 7:45 a.m. Friday …

US 12 West/IL-59 (northbound) remained closed for investigation between Route 176 and Old Rand Road as of 7:45 a.m. Friday for an extended crash investigation. The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) and the Illinois State Police are assisting the Wauconda Police Department with the investigation. The Illinois State Police were on the scene because the crash involved a commercial truck. The Speed Limit on US 12/IL-59 (Rand Road) is 55 MPH, according to a Google Maps Street View image captured October 2019.

The Island Lake Police Department, Lake Zurich Police Department and Mundelein Police Department assisted the Wauconda Police Department at the scene.

The box truck was apparently a Connexion business truck that transports electrical supplies.

LIVE TRAFFIC MAP …

The crash scene appearance initially indicates that the driver of the box truck was northbound, and the driver of the white Mitsubishi Eclipse was southbound and crossed into the northbound lanes prior to the crash.

The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
