On Tuesday June 16, 2020, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the Costco store, 25900 Riverwoods Road, Mettawa, for a report of a battery.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies determined the victim, a 50-year-old man, checked out at the checkout counter and was in the process of exiting the store when he removed his COVID-19 required face mask. After removing his face mask, Elizabeth H. Mach, 45, of Highland Park, allegedly rammed her shopping cart into the victim’s cart. Mach began yelling at the victim that he needed to put his mask back on, since he was not yet outside of the building. The victim ignored Mach, but Mach continued yelling stating, “I am a schoolteacher and I have COVID-19.” Next Mach allegedly removed her face covering and spit in the face of the victim. She then fled from the scene in her vehicle.

Following an investigation Lake County Sheriff’s detectives were able to identify the woman.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

On July 8, 2020, Sheriff’s Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mach for two counts of battery and one count of disorderly conduct. A judge set the bond amount on the warrant at $40,000.00. Lake County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Mach at her residence without incident on July 8, 2020.

Mach posted 10% of her $40,000.00 bond in the evening on July 8, 2020, and is next due in court on Monday July 29, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom T110.

The suspect while at Costco allegedly claimed she was a teacher, and official online records available from official school sources confirm that there is a full-time special education teacher that works in the City of Chicago with the same name as the suspect. Cardinal News did not confirm whether the suspect and the teacher listed in official records are the same person, or whether the suspect coincidentally has the same name as the teacher.
