Protesters Storm Grant Park, Clashing With Police While Attempting to Take Down Christopher Columbus Statue in Chicago

A large group of protesters at a rally to defund the police attempted to tear down the ChristoherColumbus statue in the park.

Protester clashed with police before dark.

Several police officers were seriously injured when they were ambushed while standing guarding the Columbus statue.

Bottles, fireworks and other objects were thrown at police.

Protesters got a rope around the statue, but were not able to take it down.

The base of the statue was tagged with graffiti. The actual statue has been covered with a tarp for several weeks.

Police used tear gas to repel demonstrators.

An EMS Plan 1 for multiple ambulances was activated about 7:30 p.m.

At least 12 protesters were arrested.

At least 4 protesters were injured.

Eastbound traffic on Roosevelt was blocked to prevent access to Columbus.

Bicycles left behind by protesters were confiscated by police.
