Police and firefighter/paramedics from Waukegan responded Wednesday after noon July 1, 2020 to a report of a serious crash on Lewis Avenue between Golf Road and Sunset Avenue near the north end of the Timberlake Shopping Center. The precise time of the crash was not initially available.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival discovered the male adult driver of the motorcycle dead at the scene. The driver of the motorcycle, a man from Beach Park in his 50s, was not initially identified pending notification of his family. The driver of the semi-truck is from Racine, Wisconsin.

The drivers of a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2020 Freightliner truck were heading northbound on Lewis Avenue between Sunset Avenue and Golf Road near the Bonnie Brook Golf Course in Waukegan when the crash occurred.

Preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of the truck was pulling over for an ambulance that was passing with lights and siren activated when the crash with the motorcycle occurred. The truck driver reportedly did not see the motorcycle in the right lane of Lewis Avenue.

Lewis Avenue is a 4-lane roadway with a Speed Limit of 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street Layer.

Waukegan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is investigating the crash. Lewis Avenue was re-opened by about 6:00 p.m. following the on-scene phase of the crash investigation.

Initially no citations were issued, and drug and toxicology testing results were pending, as is standard with fatal crashes.
