Fire at House on Shotkoski Drive in Unincorporated Hoffman Estates Involved Natural Gas Service; Severely Damaged Home

Cook County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighter/paramedics and command officers from Bartlett, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Elgin, South Elgin and Streamwood responded about 5:12 p.m. Tuesday July 14, 2020 to a report of a house fire in the block of 5300 Shotkoski Drive in unincorporated Hoffman Estates in Bartlett Fire District’s jurisdiction. Hoffman Estates Engine 24’s crew reported seeing a header at 5:18 p.m., confirming a fire. The fire scene was located just south of I-90 and just south of the Sears Centre Arena.

Bartlett Battalion 3 on arrival reported heavy fire showing from the first and second floor from the right-front corner of a 2-story single-family house. Battalion 3 reported arriving with Hoffman Estates Engine 24 on location. The fire was fueled by a natural gas leak from the service connection to the house.




Firefighters executed an interior and exterior attack of the fire , but were ordered to go defensive (exterior only) just after 5:30-5:45 p.m. The primary search of the home on the first and second floors as completed by about 5:35 p.m. Three additional engines were requested at the scene at about 5:36 p.m. with East Dundee, South Elgin and Streamwood engines assigned. Water from the master stream of an aerial ladder truck (Streamwood?) was used to extinguish the majority of the fire, which was still fed by natural gas. Crews re-entered the house for an interior attack and declared the fire under control by 6:36 p.m. The secondary search was all clear by 6:56 p.m.

A resident of the house was evaluated by paramedics for a medical condition, and a firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital for heat exhaustion. The NWS Chicago O’Hare International Airport observation at 5:51 p.m. reported an Air Temperature of 84°F, Heat Index of 85°F, Relative Humidity 48% and Wind was S at 13 MPH. Wind was reported gusting at 21 MPH at 4:51 p.m.




A total of 44 firefighters responded to the house fire, along with six command officers and a fire investigator, according to Bartlett Fire District. Firefighters from Barrington, East Dundee, Elgin, Hoffman Estates, South Elgin, and Schaumburg, and Streamwood responded mutual aid to assist Bartlett firefighters.

Cook County Sheriff’s Police deputies assisted with traffic control and crowd control at the scene.

NICOR shut off the gas leak at about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The house was declared uninhabitable and heavily damaged with much of the roof and attic burned through. A damage estimate was not initially available, and the fire is under investigation. There were no thunderstorms with lightning at the time of the fire.

A firefighter was hospitalized for heat exhaustion and a resident evaluated for a medical condition Tuesday after the Bartlett Fire Protection District responded to a house fire in an unincorporated area near Hoffman Estates.
