Emilio Cuahquentzi, 50, the manager of a Butera grocery store at Tyler Creek Plaza in Elgin, died Thursday, April 30, 2020. Emilio Cuahquentzi, of Rockford was in good health until he started feeling sick in early April 2020. He tested positive for Coronavirus COVID-19 on April 13, 2020, and was admitted to the hospital on April 18, 2020.

Emilio began his career at Butera in 1990. In July 2020, he would have celebrated his 30th anniversary at Butera. Emilio and Elizabeth met while both worked at the Butera Clock Tower location. They married when Emilio was five years into his career path at Butera.

Elizabeth Cuahquentzi, who tested positive April 11, 2020, was admitted to the hospital three days before Emilio.

Elizabeth was improving and was disconnected from the ventilator at the same hospital, SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford, where both were being treated separately for Coronavirus COVID-19. Family celebrations for Elizabeth were cut short when Emilio died the next day.

A video on the gofundme page shows Elizabeth Cuahquentzi being wheeled out by nurses to the theme from the 1976 movie “Rocky” — “Gonna Fly Now.”

Emilio and his wife, Elizabeth, have two children Paola, 20, and Josue, 23, and many relatives in Elgin. A gofundme page to support the husband and wife as both were struggling to survive posted faithful prayers of strength, hope and healing. The couple was looking forward to celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary next year.

“It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you that our beloved Emilio is with our Heavenly Father. We will update with further information at a later time. During this time we ask that you please respect the families privacy during their time of mourning and refrain from contacting them.”

Over his almost 30-year career progressing to a store manager, Emilio Cuahquentzi worked at Butera locations in Algonquin, Bartlett, Roselle, and the two locations in Elgin.
