The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 announced 1,551 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 119 additional deaths. Gov. Pritzker indicated today that case numbers that were initially expected to peak in mid- to late-April, now are forecast to peak in mid-May.

“If in fact the peak comes in mid-May or whenever that may come, we need to have 14 days after that… according to many of the experts.”

— Gov JB Pritzker

The University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) projection for Illinois for April 21, 2020 indicates that the State of Illinois is 8 days past it peak resources needed for Coronavirus COVID-19 patients.

The IHME Containment Strategy indicated that after May 19, 2020, relaxing social distancing may be possible with containment strategies that include testing, contact tracing, isolation, and limiting gathering size.

The beginning of this timeframe is determined by our estimate of when COVID-19 infections drop below 1 per 1 million people in a given location, and is also influenced by each location’s available public health funding to implement new containment strategies.

Infection rates are derived from the IHME forecast of deaths (FAQ page).
