Fatal crash involving a Jeep and two semi-trailer trucks killed a man and woman inside the Jeep SUV and another patient airlifted by LifeNet to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Deerfield-Bannockburn firefighter/paramedics and Illinois State Police troopers responded at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2020 to a report of a rollover crash involving a Jeep and a semi-trailer truck on Eastbound I-94 (southbound Tri-State Tollway) at the 22.5 Mile Marker (just south of Half Day Road).

UPDATE: Two people in a Jeep SUV were pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday morning after the Jeep they were riding in struck one semi-trailer truck, spun around and hit another semi-trailer truck.

A vehicle fire may have been extinguished prior to arrival of firefighters, but this has not been confirmed.

The first crew on arrival reported all southbound lanes were blocked by wreckage and debris.

Fire command requested a helicopter to the scene by 10:43 a.m. The landing zone was assigned to a LifeNet medical helicopter from McHenry on the southbound lanes just south of Duffy Lane.

A second Deerfield ambulance was requested at 10:45 a.m. for a truck driver. A third ambulance was requested at 10:49 a.m. — a Northbrook rescue ambulance was assigned.

Extrication of one patient from the Jeep was completed by 11:00 a.m. The patient was transferred by Deerfield Ambulance 20’s crew at the landing zone to the LifeNet helicopter, which landed about 11:13 a.m. The medical helicopter took off by 11:31 a.m., airlifting the patient to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Illinois State Police reported a man and woman inside the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupant that was extricated from the Jeep by 11:00 a.m. was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital by LifeNet helicopter.

Each male truck driver was transported to Highland Park Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening, or for evaluation only.

The Jeep was severely damage. One semi-trailer truck was jackknifed primarily on the inside three lanes and shoulder. A lot of debris also covered the tollway — blocking all southbound lanes.

All northbound and southbound traffic lanes were closed during rescue operations and the southbound lanes remained closed for an extended crash investigation. Southbound lanes were still backed up past Route 60 at 2:30 p.m. during accident reconstruction investigation. Illinois State Police reported the southbound lanes were re-opened at 3:00 p.m.

Long Grove firefighters also responded with a water tanker, but were held up when firefighters on scene reported there was no fire when they arrived.
