On Saturday, April 4, 2020 at approximately 1:57 PM Arlington Heights police officers, firefighters, and paramedics responded to a single-family residence in the block of 2400 North Evergreen Avenue. Arlington Heights police say that a resident dialed 9-1-1 requesting help because there was a man in his home with a gun. The situation was chaotic, and a Ring video of a home invasion on Evergreen Avenue was published later on Ring.com.

Arlington Heights police officers arrived immediately, and determined that the incident was bonafide, according to the police statement. All residents were safely evacuated. The caller told first responders arriving at the scene that an armed offender was still in the home who is likely shot, according to police.

Responding officers established a secure perimeter and activated the NIPAS Emergency Service Team or Northern Illinois Police Alarm System “SWAT” — a region police organization that provides tactical police officers and armored tactical equipment, armored vehicles and a command vehicle. Once the tactical police officers surrounded the house, it was determined there was no response or activity inside the house, and eventually a safe search of the residence located a deceased male on the second floor.

Arlington Heights Police Department released the identity of the deceased as Larry D. Brodacz, 58, of Buffalo Grove.

Arlington Heights Police Department detectives and forensic technicians have made significant progress in the last 24 hours with the identification of the deceased and the identification and achievement of placing a person of interest in custody, according to the police statement. Brodacz’s accomplice, who fled the scene, was quickly identified and is in police custody, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department.

The Cook county Medical Examiners office conducted a postmortem examination on the deceased Sunday morning, April 5, 2020. Their office ruled the death is a homicide as a result of a gunshot wound, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department.

Detectives are working with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to bring charges against the accomplice, currently described as a person of interest by the Arlington Heights Police Department. The investigation by Arlington Heights Police Department detectives is ongoing with the support of the Major Case Assistance Teams Forensic Unit (MCAT).
