Dr. Allison Arwady, MD, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health led a press conference early Wednesday afternoon on March 4, 2020.
Arwady emphasized for the importance of clarification and understanding that the media not release news of possible confirmed Novel Coronavirus infections until there is official notification from government health sources, such as the Illinois Department of Public Health or apparently the CDC, etc. She encouraged media avoid those type of stories because they drive fear and rumors.
Arwady also said she does expect that there were will be additional reports of person-to-person transmission of the coronavirus, but the risk in the general public remains low.
Arwady also emphasized she is confident in the number of testing kits available in the Chicago area.
Arwady recommended two websites to check. Locally, she recommended chicago.gov/coronavirus. She also recommended cdc.gov/coronavirus for trusted, updated, vetted information.
Dr. Arwady also recommended that direct communication can be initiated with Chicago Department of Public Health officials by calling 312-746-4835 or emailing [email protected]
Chicago Fire Department District Chief EMS Division emphasized that communication is key and that the public should cooperate with 911 to provide information about their symptoms, so that EMS personnel can be protected with personal protective equipment that protects themselves and protects the public.
