Homicide investigation at Greenwood Drive and Greenwood Drive East in unincorporated Des Plaines.

Christopher Mota of Waukegan and a teenager, whose identity has not been released, have been charged with murder in connection with a man found shot to death in unincorporated Maine Township, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today. Cook County Sheriff’s investigators with the assistance of the Mundelein Police and the Waukegan Police Department tracked down the suspects within four days of the homicide.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2020, Cook County Sheriff’s Police received a report of a person laying in the roadway in the block of 9500 North Greenwood Drive. Cook County Sheriff’s officers on arrival found an unresponsive man with an apparent gunshot wound. Firefighter/paramedics from Niles and North Maine Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.

The man, identified as 20-year-old Hussein Darma from unincorporated Des Plaines, was pronounced deceased at the scene at the northeast corner of Greenwood Drive and Greenwood Drive East near a stop sign. The victim appeared to have suffered a severe head injury and severe blood loss.

During their investigation, Cook County Sheriff’s Police detectives learned that on the night of Friday February 28, 2020, Hussein Darma was shot shortly after he got into a vehicle in a nearby parking lot and that 17-year-old Christopher Mota of Waukegan, and a 15-year-old male teen, also from Waukegan, were involved in the shooting. Initially police pinpointed the fatal shooting scene near the block of 9200 North Milwaukee Avenue, which is near the Niles Xsport Fitness and just south of the Golf Mill Shopping Center.

The suspects apparently transported Darma’s body to the location at Greenwood Drive and Greenwood Drive East and dumped the body at the northeast corner. The locations are separated by about one mile, and a 4 minute drive at normal speed.

Hussein Darma’s identity was released earlier this week.

The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
