A Round Lake Beach police officer was shot Sunday afternoon while responding to a domestic battery call.
Round Lake Beach police responded about 1:00 p.m. Sunday March 15, 2020 to a report of a domestic battery in progress in the block of 100 Golfview Drive in Round Lake Beach.
The incident involved two adult relatives interacting outside the home, according to Round Lake Beach Police Department.
The first Round Lake Beach officer arrived and intervened, but one of the two people involved the fight became aggressive and got into a physical fight with the officer, according to Round Lake Beach Police Department. The male adult began grabbing the officer’s gun, which was still in the police officer’s holster, police said.
During the struggle with the gun in the holster, the weapon discharged and the police officer was struck in one of his legs. One round discharged from the gun, according to Round Lake Beach Police Department.
The wounded police officer was transported to an area hospital where his condition was stabilized with injuries initially believe to be non-life-threatening.
The suspect was not injured and was taken into police custody, police said. Initially no information about any charges was released. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is conducting an independent investigation — standard operating procedure for an injury involving the discharge of a police officer’s weapon.
Round Lake Beach Police Department said there is no danger to the community.
