Companies that supply food brace for labor shortage

[Google] [Bing]

The first wave of panic buying and emergency stocking for the coronavirus outbreak began the week of March 8, 2020. Stores were able to replenish from local distribution centers, but future replenishments may be challenging. Stores were hit hardest beginning Thursday March 12 and Friday March 13, 2020.

In cities across the United States hundreds of people waited in lines that circled around stores as customers waited for stores to open, and then formed from checkout lanes to backs of stores with shopping carts filled with goods. Costco, Mariano’s, Krogers, Publix, Meijer, Walmart, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s stores were near empty in many cases, and then replenished the next day. Consumers especially stocked up on paper towels, toilet paper, bottled water, canned tuna, cans of soups, frozen pizzas and more.

Companies controlling the supply chain will be challenged with an eventual shortage of supplies and a shortage of workers to manufacture and deliver groceries to stores. Food producers and supply chain managers say there is usually enough nonperishable food on shelves, in warehouses and on the production line to last several months, but some experts believe there will be disruption for a few months. Others believe there will be only minor disruptions. According to a Washington Post article in the Anchorage Daily News, there is no shortage in food like there is with hand sanitizer.

The big concern is a coronavirus outbreak occurring inside a food manufacturing plant, which would cause the shut down of the plant, and disrupt the supply chain.
