Semi-Truck Driver Killed in Crash When Oncoming Minivan Driver Turns Left on Yellow Light at Route 83 and Westmoreland Dr, Long Grove

Fatal Crash with Prolonged Extrication

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Countryside FPD and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies responded about 11:10 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2020 to a report of a semi-trailer truck crash with injures at Route 83 and Westmoreland Drive. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and reported finding a semi-truck and a Toyota minivan with major damage.

Mundelein Fire Department Ambulance 431’s crew on arrival reported a semi-trailer truck off the road with heavy damage to the cab. Countryside Fire Protection District’s Battalion 41 requested an extrication response by about 11:14 a.m. which brought an extra ambulance and an extra engine from Mundelein.

The driver of the semi-truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

There is a prolonged extrication operation for the truck driver. The truck hit a traffic signal standard and an embankment on the northeast corner of the intersection.

Preliminary investigation shows a semi-truck, pulling a full-size trailer, driven by an adult male, was traveling northbound on Route 83, approaching Westmoreland Drive. The trailer was loaded with approximately 40,000 pounds of cargo. A 2015 Toyota minivan, driven by a 45-year-old female of Vernon Hills, was traveling southbound on Route 83, and was attempting to turn left onto eastbound Westmoreland Drive.

The semi-truck collided with the Toyota, as the Toyota was turning left. It appears the driver of the semi-truck tried to avoid the collision by veering right. After colliding with the Toyota, the semi-truck struck a traffic light pole and came to rest in a ditch.

Witnesses report the traffic light was yellow for Route 83 at the time of the crash.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.

The crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Route 83 was shut down in both directions. Southbound Route 83 is expected to be open by 5:30PM, however, northbound Route 83 will be closed for approximately eight-hours for emergency traffic signal repairs.
