Quick Stop of Chimney Fire at House on Walnut Ave Near Elm St, Arlington Heights

VIDEO: Firefighters working on the roof to extinguish a chimney fire at a house on Walnut Avenue near Elm Street in Arlington Heights.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 8:15 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020 to a report of a fire in a chimney in the block of 900 North Walnut Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Engine 2’s crew on arrival reported smoke in the area and beginning investigation of the scene.

Firefighters discovered something burning in flashing by the chimney by 8:24 p.m. and discovered fire in the attic by about 8:25 p.m.

Engine 2’s crew detected some hot spots from below while Tower 1’s crew extinguished the fire from above. The upper part of the chimney, which was burning, was knocked off the roof by crews working on the roof. Firefighters also had to pull some ceiling to check for extension of the fire down to the first floor.

Tower 1 was assigned to raise the main aerial at 8:28 p.m., primarily for lighting.

Firefighters declared the fire knocked by about 8:33 p.m. Firefighters also brought in salvage covers to protect the interior of the house.

There were no injuries reported. The fire is under investigation.

The fire response was held just below an official working fire response “Code 4.”
