The CDC says the man was likely infected from community spread. Two other new cases were identified at a nursing facility in the state, also from suspected community spread, where officials now believe there could be an outbreak

First coronavirus death in the United States

The first known person to die in the United States from a coronavirus infection was not connected with evidence that he had close contact with an infected person or any relevant travel history that would have exposed him to the virus, according to a statement by Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at the White House Saturday, February 29, 2020. The manner of unknown infection suggested the patient, who died at EvergreenHealth Medical Center in Kirkland, Washington [LIVE TRAFFIC MAP] became ill through community spread.

Additionally, three new presumptive positive cases were announced in Washington state on Saturday, February 29, 2020. ‘Presumptive Positive’ means a test given by a state or local lab was positive, but has yet to be confirmed by the CDC’s lab in Atlanta.

United States Secretary of Health and Human Service Alex Azar said, “It’s important to remember, for the vast majority of individuals who contract the novel coronavirus, they will experience mild to moderate symptoms, and their treatment will be to remain at home, treating their symptoms, the way they would a severe cold, or the flu.”

The three cases included the man who died, and two cases at Life Care Center, a nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington, according to Dr. Jeffrey Duchin, health officer for Seattle and King County, Washington. One case is a health care worker, a woman in her 40s, who is hospitalized in satisfactory condition with no relevant history of travel. The other Washington state case is a woman in her 70s who was a resident of the center, and was later listed in serious condition in another hospital.

The first death of an American occurred earlier in February 2020 when a US citizen died in Wuhan, China, where the virus first publicly appeared connected to human infections in late December 2019.

Meanwhile, United States is expanding existing travel restrictions on Iran to include foreign nationals who had visited Iran in the last 14 days, according Vice President Mike Pence. The US will increase travel advisories for Italy and South Korea to Level 4 — the highest level — advising Americans not to travel to specific regions in those countries.
