A head-on crash occurred involving a Lake County Sheriff’s SUV on Friday, February 28, 2020, at approximately 1:05 a.m., according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was traveling eastbound on Grass Lake Road, west of Stonegate Drive, in unincorporated Antioch when a head-on crash occurred, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s. As the deputy was traveling east, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Carlos R. Perez Cordero, 24, of the block of 38300 North 3rd Avenue in unincorporated Spring Grove, was traveling west on Grass Lake Road. Perez Cordero crossed the center median and struck the deputy’s SUV head-on.

“We are extremely thankful the sheriff’s deputy was not killed or seriously injured in this senseless crash. I am very impressed that after being involved in a major crash, the deputy was able to pursue the fleeing offender on foot. The drunk driver will be held accountable for his poor decisions, which could have ultimately cost lives.”

— Sheriff John Idleburg

Both vehicles sustained major damage. Perez Cordero attempted to flee on foot, but the deputy was able to free himself from his damaged squad, and pursue Perez Cordero. The deputy caught Perez Cordero and apprehended him. It was determined Perez Cordero was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Perez Cordero and the deputy were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries. Both were treated and released.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

— Lake County Sheriff’s Office

Perez Cordero was transported to the Lake County Jail and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges:

Two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol (class 4 felonies)

Driving under the influence of alcohol (class A misdemeanor)
Operating a vehicle without insurance (infraction)

Improper lane usage (infraction)

Additional charges are likely.

Perez Cordero is scheduled to appear today at an initial court hearing.
