What the San Francisco 49ers (and Fans) Need for a Perfect Game Against the Green Bay Packers

Is Donte Whitner on target? 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo compared himself to Aaron Rodgers earlier in his career but Donte Whitner doesn’t see any similarities between the two signal callers as he breaks down the match up. Whitner points out what makes Rodgers difficult to defend and how the 49ers were able to stop the Packers QB in their previous meeting.

Here’s a to-do list of sorts for the San Francisco 49er NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers at 5:40 p.m. CT at Levi’s Stadium on FOX.

Shut down Packers Wide Receiver Devante Adams, who is Aaron Rodgers’ favorite throwing target. In 2019 the 49ers’ pass defense was #1 in the NFL, allowing only 169.2 yards per game. San Francisco 49ers Cornerback Richard Sherman produced a 46.8 passer rating when opposing quarterbacks.

Shut down Green Packers’ running back Aaron Jones on rushing and pass receptions.

A repeat of multiple sacks — Aaron Rodgers was sacked five times when the 49ers beat the Packers 37-8 on November 24, 2019 (Week 12). The 49ers are coming off 6 sacks against last week’s victory against Minnesota.

At least two real good early sacks by Nick Bosa: In the Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers, Bosa sacked Aaron Rodgers once and recovered a fumble forced by Fred Warner on Rodgers in the 37–8 win. Looking for a good performance from defensive end Arik Armstead and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and more of the front four. San Francisco’s quartet of Arik Armstead (10), Nick Bosa (9), DeForest Buckner (7½) and Dee Ford (6½) combined for 33 sacks in the regular season. Any perfection of Week 12 on this theme would be greatly appreciated.

The 49ers defense won 8 games while holding opponents to 20 or fewer points, ranking 8th in the NFL and averaging 19.4 points per game.

Continue the 49ers winning way by dominating with a variety of threats by passing and rushing. Here’s Jimmy Garoppolo 2019: 27 TD, 13 INT, 102.0 Rating. The 49ers also won 7 games when they rushed for 130+ yards. The 49ers ranked second in the NFL for most rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Best of luck to the three-headed rushing monster consisting of 49ers running back Tevin Coleman, running back Raheem Mostert, and running back Matt Breida.

A long throw to completion from Garoppolo would also be a treat; a lot of talking sports heads think Garoppolo can only throw to the middle, but a few have mentioned he has wider, longer throwing talent.

Robbie Gould field goals. In a twisted way, nothing will be more pleasing to Bears fans who hate the Packers than a few Robbie Gould field goals. Those same Chicago Bears will be saying, “Why don’t we have Robbie Gould and Jimmy Garoppolo.” We HAD Gould, and Jimmy Garoppolo grew up in Arlington Heights. Jeez! What could be more obvious?

Witnessing at least three interceptions on Aaron Rodgers would be 49ers gold. Good luck to cornerback Richard Sherman.

Last, but definitely not least, at least 3 spectacular receptions by George Kittle (85 receptions, 1,053 yards, 5 touchdowns) — either touchdowns or receptions followed up by his trademark of plowing through defenders and pushing off defenders that are going for the tackle.

Recent Rivalry

In the most recent post-season rivalry between the 49ers and the Packers, the 49ers won 23-20 in a 2013 season wild card game on January 5, 2014 at Lambeau Field. The 49ers ended the post-season losing to the Seattle Seahawks 23-17 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

In the 2012 post-season, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers 45-31 in the Divisional on January 12, 2013 at Candlestick Park. The 49ers won the NFC Championship, beating the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 at the Georgia Dome on January 20, 2013. The 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens 31-34 at Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013.

Stephen A. Smith predicts Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers will advance to the Super Bowl after defeating Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers 35-27 in the NFC Championship Game.
