Natural Gas Leak After Vehicle Hits Gas Line at J.J. Twigs Pizza & Pub, Palatine; Southbound Northwest Highway Temporarily Shut Down

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Palatine responded about 9:31 p.m. Saturday January 18, 2020 to a report of a natural gas leak after a customer hit a gas pipe with a vehicle at JJ Twigs Pizza & Pub, 150 South Northwest Highway.

Winds were from the west at 23 MPH with gusts to 37 MPH, according to NWS weather station at O’Hare. Northwest Central Dispatch reported that local wind was from the southwest at 38.8 MPH.

Nicor was advised to expedite to the scene. The pipe was sheared between the ground and the valve, so firefighters were unable to turn a valve to stop the gas flow. However, firefighters were able to slow down the leak by crimping the pipe with minimal gas flow by about 9:47 p.m.

Southbound Northwest Highway was temporarily closed, but was re-opened by 9:50 p.m.

The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
