A school bus company will be affected this morning after an extra alarm fire destroyed a neighboring large building with a bow string truss roof near 85th St and Vincennes Avenue in Chicago.
Chicago firefighters responded about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday January 14, 2020 to a vacant warehouse building fire in the block of 8500 South Vincennes Avenue. The fire response was elevated to a Still and Box Alarm by 10:36 p.m. with Battalion 21 in command, reporting a 1-story bow string truss building approximately 100 feet by 150 feet with fire through the roof and Engine 73’s crew hooking up to a hydrant, using water from their deck gun by 10:40 p.m. Battalion Chief 21 was also designating a collapse zone for the building, anticipating hazards over the next few hours. Tower Ladder 34 was set up at the front of the building, fed by Engine 121.
The fire was elevated to a 2-11 about 10:58 p.m. A Level 1 Hazmat was called out about 11:17 p.m. while wind was out of the north at 10 MPH. The roof collapsed about 11:19 p.m. The fire was elevated to a 3-11 Alarm about 11:30 p.m. The fire was declared about 12:02 a.m. Wednesday and buildings exposed to the south of the main fire initially were reported as having no issues.
The building was not associated with Sunrise Bus Company, according to the Chicago Fire Department. However, traffic and fire operations in the area Wednesday morning may affect operations of the bus company.
No injuries were initially reported.
