Fatal One-Vehicle Crash on Nelson Road West of Hartland Rd, Woodstock

McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies and Woodstock Fire Rescue firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:09 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 to a report of a one-vehicle crash down an embankment in the block of 16700 Nelson Road in Woodstock.

Deputies and firefighter/paramedics discovered on arrival that a single vehicle was off the roadway and had struck a tree with two victims trapped inside.

Firefighters extricated the victims in about 20 minutes, but a 44 year-old male passenger from Capron, Illinois was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was identified as Shannon Velmont, age 45. She was transported by Flight For Life to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, where she was listed in serious condition.

Velmont was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, and driving on a revoked driver’s license following the crash.

The road was closed until about 5:00 p.m. while on scene crash investigators were working at the scene. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Accident Investigation Team and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation of the crash.

Nelson Road is a 2-lane rural highway where the Speed Limit is posted 55 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View on August 2012.
