Woodstock Man Dies After His Ejection from Rollover Crash on Charles Rd West of Queen Anne Rd Early Sunday Morning

DRIVER CHARGED WITH DUI

A 34-year-old male passenger of Woodstock, who had been ejected from the vehicle and was transported to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital, has been pronounced dead at another hospital. The male ejection victim was first transported to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital from the crash scene. He was then airlifted to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, where he was pronounced dead, according to a release from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Woodstock firefighter/paramedics and McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies responded about 2:00 a.m. Sunday November 24, 2019 to a report of a rollover crash with entrapment and ejection on Charles Road just west of Queen Anne Road.

Firefighter/paramedics and sheriff’s deputies on arrival found a Toyota Camry on its side, with a snapped utility pole and covered by power lines. Two people, trapped inside the vehicle, were suffering life-threatening injuries. One person that was ejected from the vehicle during the crash was also suffering life-threatening injuries.

Fire command requested two Flight for Life helicopters and ComEd linemen to respond to the scene to cut the power and secure the scene.

Firefighters extricated the two people inside the car by about 2:30 p.m. Both extricated victims were airlifted in two separate Flight for Life helicopters to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The helicopters landed in a field next to the roadway.

A Wheaton woman, age 44, who was trapped in the Toyota Camry, was airlifted via Flight for Life to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She is listed in serious condition on Monday, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, Shawn Brautigam, age 32, of Wheaton, also was airlifted via Flight for Life to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center. He is also listed in critical condition Monday at Condell.

Shawn Brautigam was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Additional charges are pending. Brautigam’s first court date is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. December 12, 2019.

The crash is under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. The single-vehicle occurred near a curve of Charles Road — a two-lane rural highway located between Route 120 and Route 47.

A separate vehicle later crashed into a section of the utility pole that was broken during the initial crash. No injuries were reported in the second crash. The early morning crash was located just north of Woodstock North High School.
