The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) will have a longer name after Chicago billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin donated $125 million, the largest donation in MSI’s history.

On Thursday October 3, 2019, MSI announced the largest single gift ever – a $125 million gift from the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund. The museum announced this is an incredibly generous gift, which will help MSI remain a vital resource for science learning well into the 21st century. In recognition of this historic gift, MSI announced that the museum name will become the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

Among the museum’s permanent exhibits are a full-size replica coal mine, German submarine U-505 captured during World War II, a 3,500-square-foot (330 square meter) model railroad, the command module of Apollo 8, Science Storms, Genetics: Decoding Life, ToyMaker 3000, Yesterday’s Mainstreet, and the first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel passenger train (Pioneer Zephyr).

According to Forbes magazine Ken Griffin ranks 38th with a real-time net worth of $12.5 billion on October 3, 2019.  Griffin founded and runs Citadel, a Chicago-based hedge fund firm he founded in 1990 that manages $32 billion in assets. Griffin is majority owner of Citadel Securities, one of Wall Street’s largest market-making firms, responsible for one of five stock trades in the United States.

Griffin has donated approximately $900 million in his lifetime, including $300 million to nonprofits in Chicago. In 2015, Griffin donated $10 million to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and an unrestricted gift of $40 million to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 2016, Griffin also donated $12 million to the Chicago Park District to help fund separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians along the city’s 18-mile lakefront.

Griffin is a Harvard University alumni, who started trading in his dorm room using real-time stock data from a satellite dish on the roof of the dorm.
