A Hard Rock Hotel, which had been under construction for the last several months in downtown New Orleans, has collapsed (WLTX CBS affiliate in Columbia, South Carolina).

Police and firefighter/paramedics from New Orleans responded Saturday morning October 12, 2019 to a report of a building collapse with multiple injuries at the corner of Canal Street and North Rampart Street in New Orleans (1031 Canal St, New Orleans, LA). The building was the Hard Rock hotel under renovation construction.

New Orleans Fire Department Superintendent Tim McConnell said in a news conference near the building collapse scene that the upper six to eight floors of the structure collapsed. He said that the structure remains very unstable. Nearby buildings were evacuated Saturday morning.

Officials in an initial report said one person is dead, three are missing, and 18 people were transported to the area hospitals. Approximately 45 people were working inside the building. There were no initial reports of anyone injured on the street below.

Florida-based Hard Rock International unveiled plans for the 18-story, mixed use development in February 2018. The Hard Rock International development would feature 350 hotel rooms, a pool, assorted meeting rooms, and condominium units ranging from 650- to 2,300-square-feet.

The property is located at the site of the former Woolworth Department Store in downtown New Orleans.
