Crystal Lake police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:55 a.m. Wednesday October 23, 2019 to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle on Route 31 near Daniel Drive in unincorporated Crystal Lake — about 1 mile north of Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, Crystal Lake police and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department personnel responded to the scene and discovered a 31 year-old man from Crystal Lake was dead at the scene.

The victim’s identity was released late Wednesday as Alexander Felker. Initially, it was unknown by police investigators why Felker was walking in the road when the crash occurred.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse being driven by a 40-year-old Cary man was northbound on Route 31 when the vehicle struck the victim.

Northbound Route 31 was closed between Three Oaks Road and Crystal Lake Avenue until about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. The McHenry County Sheriff’s office announced the closure of northbound Route 31 lanes via a Nixle alert sent at 6:25 a.m. Southbound lanes still were open during this time.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating the fatal incident on the high speed state route. Near the crash scene, Route 31 is a divided 4-lane highway with opposite lanes separated by concrete curbing and/or a concrete J-wall south of Daniel Drive; and a grassy median and guardrail north of Daniel Drive. The Speed Limit along northbound Route 31 changes from 55 MPH to 50 MPH to 40 MPH in the area of the crash scene, according to Google Maps Street View.
