A joint state and federal investigation has led to a child pornography charge against a Winnetka man after he used a social media app to send a sexually explicit video of a minor, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Wednesday September 25, 2019.
Robert Baxter, 45, of the block of 1500 Tower Road in Winnetka, was arrested Tuesday following a joint investigation conducted by members of the FBI Chicago Child Exploitation and Human
Trafficking Task Force, which includes Cook County Sheriff’s Police and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Investigators.
In July 2018, an undercover FBI agent was sent a link to a sexually explicit video of a minor via a user on the social media app Kik.
Investigators traced the account to Baxter and later executed a search of his home. Baxter admitted to investigators that he used Kik to send the video link to the undercover agent.
According to Forbes Kik is being closed down because of a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into cryptocurrency created by the app’s owners. According to Forbes, the anonymous messaging app was also rife with grooming activities and the sharing of child abuse material.
Baxter was charged with one count of dissemination of child pornography, a Class X felony. He appeared for a bond hearing today where he was given a $10,000 deposit bond.
The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
