Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded Thursday morning September 12, 2019 to an aircraft crash on Route 50 (John Hanson Highway) near Freeway Airport. The small private aircraft hit a vehicle on the highway. Apparently the aircraft crashed just short of Runway 18 at Freeway Airport. Initially it was not confirmed whether the aircraft was landing or taking off.
The left wing of a single-engine aircraft is torn off the aircraft and it was observed that the separated wing is crashed with the front-end of a silver passenger vehicle about 50 feet or more east of the crashed aircraft. The aircraft, passenger vehicle and debris are located near the center divider in the eastbound lane(s).
The crash scene is located about 12 miles east-northeast of Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
The owners brought up the risk of crashes, citing at least 10 that have happened previously, during a public hearing Tuesday on a bill that would allow townhomes and single-family detached dwellings to be built on the airport property. https://t.co/zz8E8sRB5M
