A 35-year-old man killed his 1-year-old baby inside a Joliet home Saturday, according to police, before taking his own life.

Joliet police responded about 2:45 p.m. Saturday September 21, 2019 to a report of a domestic disturbance reported by neighbors in the block of 8300 Buckingham Lane. The neighbors reported they heard a woman screaming at the residence on Buckingham Lane near Oxford Way.

Upon arrival the responding police officer was met by a 32 year-old female victim, and a 9 year-old female juvenile victim in front of the residence. Both the 32 year-old female, and the 9 year-old female juvenile appeared to have fresh injuries. The officer was advised that the sound of gunshots came from the house moments before his arrival. The officer was also advised by the 32 year-old female that the suspect, a 35 year old-male, was married to her but they are now separated. She also advised that their 1-1/2 year-old baby they had when together was also inside the residence with him.

The Joliet police officer tried to make contact with the 35 year-old male suspect who was barricaded in the residence, but his attempts were unsuccessful. The Joliet Police Department Special Operations Squad and Crisis Negotiators responded to the scene. Attempts were made to communicate with the 35 year-old male suspect in order to get him to come out peacefully. All attempts at communicating with the suspect met with negative results, so the SOS Team breached the residence to conduct a search of the residence and take the 35 year-old male suspect into custody. The search revealed that the 35 year-old male suspect and the 1-1/2 year-old male juvenile were deceased from apparent gunshot wounds inflicted by the suspect.

Both female victims were transported to St. Joseph Hospital to be treated for their injuries. The scene is located one block south of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Joliet.

Joliet Police Department immediately began investigation of the two deaths at the house in a new subdivision in northwest Joliet.

Police say a man killed his 1 1/2-year-old son and then himself, and a SWAT team was called in during a standoff. CBS 2’s Jeremy Ross reports.
