Chicago Police Officer Shot Multiple Times During Attempt to Arrest Fugitive Near 65th St and Winchester Avenue

COP SHOOTER ALSO SUSPECT IN SHOOTING OF WOMAN WEDNESDAY NEAR MILWAUKEE AVE AND LAKE ST

A Chicago police officer was shot while attempting to arrest a fugitive about 8:40 a.m. Saturday September 21, 2019 near 65th Street and Winchester Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, Chicago.

Suspect Michael Blackman is believed to have been shot by police about 3:30 p.m. in the block of 6400 South Bell Avenue. About 4 p.m. police said they apprehended a person of interest — believed to be 45-year-old Michael Blackman — at 64th Street and Bell Avenue after an armed encounter with police. Police said the person was shot by officers. No officers were injured.

UPDATE:
The police officer, age 40 and a 16-year veteran, was shot in the lower torso resulting in significant injuries with life-threatening blood loss.

The police officer applied his own tourniquet to treat himself.

The police officer was rushed to surgery for repair of a hole in a vein and for other injuries, including multiple fractures in his left leg.

The police officer was part of the Fugitive Apprehension Unit.

The suspect is believed to be Michael Blackman, a 45 year-old male/black, who is also the suspect involved in the shooting of a woman near Milwaukee Avenue and Lake Street on Wednesday just before noon, and extensive criminal history back to 1991.




The police officer was near 65th Street and Winchester Avenue when he was shot multiple times. Chicago Fire Department paramedics did not transport the officer to a hospital. Fellow police officers transported the wounded police officer to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Christ Medical Center. The officer is reported to be critically wounded and undergoing emergency surgery.

Police are working on an assumption that the suspect entered a home in the neighborhood near the intersection of 65th Street and Winchester Avenue. The suspect was reported to be wearing a bullet proof vest when he returned multiple shots at police while fleeing.

Residents in the neighborhood were advised by police to Shelter in Place and stay away from windows.

Chicago Police Department did not initially release details about the shooting or the police activity.
