If the construction workers at Thorntons gas station project at 1322 East Thomas Street, Arlington Heights are able pull off a strong finish, the new 24-hour gas station and convenience store should be open the first week in September 2019 — possibly Thursday, September 5, 2019. The gas station and convenience store is in the jurisdiction of the City of Prospect Heights, but similar to Aldi across Thomas Street, Thorntons has an Arlington Heights postal address.

During the next week, much of the exterior work is expected to be completed, and the remaining three weeks crews will focus on finishing the interior work.

The gas pump lanes are perpendicular to Rand Road to the north of the building. There appears to be two driveways that exit to Thomas Street.

Thorntons LLC, formerly Thorntons Inc., is a gasoline and convenience store chain headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. The gas station with the Arlington Heights address already shows up on Google maps and Google searches, but as of Tuesday August 6, 2019 the location was not listed on Thorntons official locations page. Thorntons LLC currently operates over 190 locations which vary from traditional fuel and convenience stores to stores with expanded kitchen formats to full Travel Centers. In addition to Illinois, Thorntons stores are located in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.

In early 2019, Thorntons was acquired by a joint venture between Arclight Capital Partners (a private equity firm that focuses on energy with headquarters in Boston) and BP (the British multinational oil, gas and energy company with headquarters in London). The acquisition was announced in early December 2018 and was closed on February 11, 2019. At the closing, Simon Richards, former Head of Regional Development of BP Products North America, was named as the CEO of Thorntons LLC. Simon replaced former Thorntons CEO and Chairman Matt Thornton, who is the son of James H. Thornton, who founded Thorntons in 1971. The company announced at the closing that all existing stores would continue to operate under the Thorntons name and retain Thorntons team members.

In 2008, Matt Thornton founded L3 Capital, based in Chicago. L3 Capital is a private equity real estate firm targeting institutional quality, core plus and value-add, urban retail investments within first tier United States markets. Matt Thornton in August 2019 is listed as a member of the Advisory Board at L3 Capital.
