Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson, age 36, died in a motorcycle crash with a minivan about 10:20 p.m. Saturday August 17, 2019 in the block of 5600 Mt. Bonnell Road in Austin, Texas. Benson, 36, and a female passenger riding with him were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

According to police, the driver of a minivan pulled in front of Benson’s motorcycle before the crash occurred. Police reported speed and poor visibility were the biggest factors in the crash.

Benson was one of top high school recruits in the country out of Midland, Texas, and is considered a key player in the Texas Longhorns’ resurgence under former coach Mack Brown.

Benson played at Texas from 2001-2004, and was one of the most prolific rushers in NCAA and University of Texas history. Benson won the Doak Walker award given to the nation’s top running back in 2004.

Benson, a running back, was drafted No. 4 overall by the Chicago Bears in 2005. Cedric Benson played three seasons for the Bears, rushing for nearly 1,600 yards, before being released in 2008.

Benson moved on to play four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and only five games with the Green Bay Packers during the 2012 season because a season-ending injury also ended his career with the NFL.
