Two Drivers in Critical Condition After High-Speed Head-on Crash Near Rollins Rd and Hickory Ave, Round Lake Beach

Round Lake Beach Police and Round Lake Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:30 p.m. Sunday July 14, 2019 to a report of a serious crash involving a pickup truck and a sedan near Rollins Road and Hickory Avenue in Round Lake Beach.

Rescuers on arrival discovered both drivers still inside their vehicles and one vehicle was on fire. Both drivers were extricated by Round Lake FPD firefighter/paramedics and were transported to nearby hospital(s) that were not initially specified by police. The passenger compartment of the pickup truck was severely compressed, and both vehicles were severely damaged. Both drivers were listed in extremely critical condition at the hospital(s). There were no additional passengers.

Round Lake Beach police are investigating the crash with the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. The crash was initially described as a “high-speed, head-on” collision. The crash occurred near State Bank of The Lakes, 10 East Rollins Road which is located on the north side of Rollins Road.

Police are not initially release the names of the drivers, one driver was charged with suspected driving under the influence.

The vehicle of a civilian volunteer, who was assisting police with traffic control, was hit by a car that was driven by a motorist who fell asleep while driving near the crash scene. No injuries were reported in the secondary crash and initially there was no official report of charges or citations connected to the secondary crash.
