Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Antioch firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:45 p.m. Thursday July 4, 2019 to the area of North Drexel Boulevard and Lotus Avenue in unincorporated Antioch to a report of a multiple-injury traffic crash involving an overturned golf cart.
Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene and found several juveniles with serious injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows a custom golf cart, was driven by a 17-year-old male of Lake Barrington, northbound on North Drexel Boulevard toward Grass Lake Road. The golf cart is designed to seat six people, however, there were seven individuals in and on the golf cart, including one standing on the back-bumper area.
As the driver approached Grass Lake Road, he made a sharp turn, causing the golf cart to roll. All seven occupants were ejected from the golf cart.
The injured passengers consisted of the following:
11-year-old male of Algonquin
13-year-old female of Algonquin
13-year-old female of Huntley
15-year-old female of Huntley
16-year-old female of Algonquin
26-year-old male of Algonquin
The six passengers were transported via ambulance to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the passengers sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. The driver was examined by paramedics at the scene, but was not transported to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said, “While it can be fun and exciting to ride in golf carts or other non-traditional vehicles, it can also be extremely dangerous. It is very fortunate this crash did not result in the tragic loss of life. This incident serves as a stark reminder to parents and others to always be extremely cautious when allowing children to operate non-traditional vehicles. Traffic laws must also always be adhered to.”
