Explosion at Market on University Shopping Center; Part of Strip Mall in Plantation, Florida Destroyed

A large gas explosion at a shopping center in Plantation, Florida injured at least 21 people Saturday morning.

Plantation firefighters, Plantation police officers, Davie police officers and Davie Fire Rescue firefighters responded Saturday morning to a large explosion at the Market on University shopping center just south of The Fountains shopping center in the block of 1000 South University Drive. A west unit or west units of a 1-story retail/commercial strip mall were destroyed at the shopping center known as Market on University. The strip mall is located directly east of the LA Fitness, 1041 South University Drive in Plantation, Florida. The LA Fitness also showed significant damage after the explosion.

Injuries are reported, but there were initially no official details available as of 12:55 p.m. ET — except that firefighter/paramedics were treating multiple patients after a gas explosion.

A Publix grocery store is also located about 450 feet south-southeast of the explosion site.

A large field of debris was visible at the scene, including some large and small pieces of debris.
