Driver of Rolls-Royce Wraith Disregards Police Orders to Stop on Huron Street After Shots Fired

Chicago police responded just after 3:15 a.m. Wednesday May 8, 2019 to the area of the 300 block of West Erie Street and then Huron Street and Orleans Street for a report of shots fired. Police discovered people were arguing after leaving a nightclub. Police initially did not disclose the club that the people exited in the River North neighborhood.

A video posted on Instagram from a person standing on the south side of Huron Street shows at least 35 rounds were fired. The video captured a white 2015 Rolls-Royce Wraith 2 door coupe exiting a public parking lot across Huron Street from Nacional 27 dance club. As the driver of the Rolls-Royce was exiting the parking lot, police had guns drawn and aimed at the vehicle. Police ordered the driver to stop and were yelling “hands up” but the driver ignored the police and fled the scene. One police officer was leaning into the Rolls-Royce and making contact with the vehicle as the motorist fled the scene.

During intense gunfire, motorists on northbound Orleans Street were making U-turns to escape the gunfire.

A witness told police there had been an argument between people in the white Rolls-Royce and people in another car in the block of 300 West Erie Street about 3:15 a.m. Over 30 shots were fired and the driver of the Rolls-Royce took a right out of the public parking lot and headed westbound on Huron Street. The driver of the Rolls-Royce then crashed on the Ontario feeder ramp to the Kennedy Expressway.

Two people in the Rolls-Royce fled on foot and one of them was arrested nearby. The other eluder remained at large. Police said no one was hit by gunfire, and no other injuries were reported. Initially it was unknown if only one person was shooting or whether there was a shootout.

During the investigation of the shooting and crash, a person in another car got into an argument with police officers and was placed in custody. Chicago police said charges were pending.
