Authorities on Monday April 1, 2019 released the identity of the wrong-way driver that killed Illinois State Police Trooper Gerald Ellis on westbound I-94 at Mile Marker 16.75 in a head-on crash that occurred in darkness early Saturday morning. Dan Davies, age 44, of Calumet City, was identified as the wrong-way driver, who was also killed in the crash Saturday morning March 30, 2019 at about 3:24 a.m. on I-94 near Green Oaks and Libertyville (Mile Mark).

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said an autopsy performed Monday April 1,2019 showed Davies died from multiple injuries due to a car crash. Davies also had alcohol in his system, but the coroner did not release the level of alcohol that was in the wrong-way driver’s system.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is awaiting toxicology results for Dan Davies.

Trooper Gerald Ellis, 36, was in his police SUV traveling home on westbound I-94 (northbound for this stretch of interstate) just south of the IL-176 exit when the two vehicles crashed head-on. Davies was driving the wrong way, eastbound (southbound) in the westbound (northbound) lanes of I-94.

Dan Davies’ vehicle — a black SUV or minivan — overturned near the inside lane after the crash. Both vehicles were severely damaged. Initially there was some confusion whether there were two total occupants in the black vehicle driven by Davies. No details about about a passenger have been released.

Details the fatal crash have not been release while the crash is still under investigation.

Illinois State Trooper Gerald Ellis is survived by his wife, Stacy, daughters Kaylee and Zoe, brother Keith and his parents.

Donations to the Ellis family can be made by visiting the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation website at www.isphf.org/donations and noting Trooper Gerald Ellis Memorial Fund in the comments section.

Donations for the Ellis family can also be mailed to the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation at P.O. Box 8168, Springfield, Illinois, 62791.
