Des Plaines Firefighter Dies After Motorcycle Crash with Car on Old McHenry Rd near St. Matthew Lutheran Church Easter Morning

Lake Zurich firefighter/paramedics and Hawthorn Woods police responded about 10:07 a.m. Sunday April 21, 2019 to a report of a car vs motorcycle crash in front of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School, 24500 North Old McHenry Road. Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find the motorcyclist unconscious after the crash. Police discovered that Paul Miller, a Des Plaines firefighter/paramedics, was the injured motorcyclist.

Some Lake Zurich fire units were held up by a train, and an additional ambulance dispatched to the scene.

Lake Zurich Fire Rescue firefighter/paramedics transported Miller, age 33, to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The male driver of the car was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington, according to police. The man, age 77, is a resident of Englewood, Florida, and information about his injuries were not initially released.

The family of Des Plaines firefighter Paul Miller decided on Tuesday to removed him from life support, according to Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax and McHenry Township Fire Protection District Chief Tony Huemann, who reported the information in a joint statement Tuesday at 1:47 p.m. on the MABAS-Illinois Facebook page Tuesday (full statement below). The fire chiefs reported Paul Miller’s condition was unchanged, and that it had been determined that recovery was medically impossible.

Initially investigation showed that Paul Miller and his motorcycle, eastbound on Old McHenry Road, were hit when the driver of a car turned in front of him as the driver pulled out of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School parking lot Sunday morning.

Hawthorn Woods police said Miller was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and that the crash is under investigation.
