The River North area, known for its nightlife and restaurants, is in a police district that’s experienced more than a 60 percent increase in crime in the past four years.

On Saturday March 23,2019 about 3:30 a.m., an off-duty Chicago police officer was shot and killed. CPD Officer John Rivera, age 23, was sitting in a vehicle in the block of 700 North Clark Street near Clark Street and Huron Street about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when two males approached the vehicle. One male offender fired shots into the car, striking Rivera in the chest, arm and mouth. Another man, age 23, sitting in the vehicle was also shot and wounded.

Two weeks ago, on Friday March 8, 2019, Thurman Bailey, working security at Sound-Bar, 226 West Ontario Street, was shot by a male offender, who wasn’t allowed into the nightclub. On Friday March 22, 2019, police arrested Armond Williams, age 37 of Villa Park and charged him with First Degree Murder. Thurman Bailey was 28.

A second person — a 58 year-old male — was also shot and wounded.

Sound-Bar was closed less than one week later as police declared the nightclub a threat to the public because the shooting was connected to employees and patrons.

One year ago Park Ridge CEO Miguel Beedle was stabbed to death during a robbery in an alley outside a River North club in the block of 400 North State Street on Friday March 23, 2018.

Chicago Police data shows 20 serious incidents within a half-mile radius within the recent shooting homicides, which up until recently have been rare.
