Hit-and-Run Driver Hits Boy and Grandfather at Lake St and Plum St, Aurora; Boy Dies from Injuries and the Driver Is At Large

Aurora police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:42 p.m. Monday March 25, 2019 to a report that a hit-and-run driver hit a child at Lake Street (Route 31) and Plum Street. Police and firefighters paramedics arrived to find that an 8-year-old boy and his grandfather were struck by a vehicle as they were crossing the street with the boy’s sister. Aurora police say they were crossing Lake Street, near Plum Street when the boy and the grandfather were hit by a southbound vehicle.

Aurora Fire Department paramedics transported the boy and his grandfather to a nearby hospital in Aurora, where the boy was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses reported the driver of the vehicle then fled the scene. A vehicle matching the description that the witness described was found parked with heavy front end damage on a nearby residential street. An additional witnesses reported at least two occupants exited the vehicle, and that one fled the area on foot. The driver and passenger(s) were still at large early Tuesday.

Also, a police squad car, blocking traffic at the scene was also involved in a crash. The police squad car was hit at 8:44 p.m. Monday by a vehicle driven by a driver suspected of DUI. A police officer was inside the police squad car, but was not injured.

John Lundy, age 48, is the suspected DUI driver of a white 2009 Dodge van involved in the crash with the police squad car. Lundy also fled the scene of the crash, but was caught a few blocks away.

• Operating Uninsured Motor Vehicle Misdemeanor
• Fail to Yield / Emergency Vehicle Misdemeanor
• Leaving the Scene/Accident Misdemeanor
• Aggravated DUI – Class 1 Felony
• Aggravated DUI – Class 4 Felony
• DUI – Misdemeanor

Lundy is scheduled for a bond call today, Tuesday March 26, 2019. His first court date is scheduled for April 18, 2019 at the Kane County Courthouse.

The investigation of the fatal hit-and-run vehicle vs pedestrian cash continues as members of the Aurora Police Department Traffic Unit, along with the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division continue to attempt to identify the driver and passenger or passengers. Lake Street is a 4-lane roadway near Plum Street. The Speed Limit on Lake Street (Route 31) is 30 MPH.
