Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:55 p.m. Thursday February 14, 2019 to a report that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Walnut Lane at Maple Lane.

A male victim was alert and talking to first responders when he was met by Elk Grove Village Fire Department firefighter/paramedics. The victim, identified as 75 year-old Gerald Frens, was treated and transported by firefighter/paramedics to Amita Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village. Frens suffered a head injury that required emergency surgery, and was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. Friday.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner, Frens died as a result of a closed head injury.

The accident investigation is ongoing by Elk Grove Village Police Department. According to police, the driver of a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban was heading westbound on Walnut Lane from Tonne Road and turned left onto Maple Lane. The driver-side mirror struck Gerald Frens’ head while he was standing at the curb, which would indicate the driver cut the corner without squaring the turn.

Elk Grove Village police said the driver of the SUV was a 63-year-old Elk Grove Village man. The driver was cited for an improper turn and driving with no valid proof of insurance. Police initially did not release the identity of the driver of the Chevrolet Suburban.
