Wesley Anderson, age 38, of Genoa City, is a male suspect charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals and reckless discharge of a firearm, Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller said. A 9-1-1 caller reported witnessing Anderson shoot and kill a dog in the basement of a house in Fox Lake.

A person claiming to be a witness dialed 9-1-1 on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 and reported that Wesley Anderson had shot a dog on Thursday February 14, 2019 in the basement of a house in the block of 300 Washington Street in Fox Lake. The house is located less than one block from the Fox Lake Police Station and Fox Lake Fire Protection District fire station. The witness told police Anderson wrapped the dog in plastic, then in a blanket, and threw the dog in a trash can.

Fox Lake Police investigated and learned that Wesley Anderson had been living at a residence in Genoa City, Wisconsin and at a house in the block of 300 Washington Street in Fox Lake. Anderson owned the dog, which was described as a Doberman pinscher that lived in the Fox Lake house.

Fox Lake Police recovered the dog’s body in the garbage can on the evening of Tuesday February 19, 2019, and transported the dog’s body to a veterinarian for a canine autopsy. The veterinarian autopsy results reported on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 ruled the dog died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police obtained a search warrant for the Fox Lake house on Friday, February 22, 2019 and recovered three handguns, shell casings, and evidence that the dog was shot in the basement, according to Fox Lake Police Department.

The felony aggravated cruelty to animals and reckless discharge of a firearm charges are also probational, according to Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller. Probational is an order by the court involving an immediate period of supervision over an offender, instead of serving time in prison.

Anderson was released from Lake County jail after posting the required 10 percent ($5,000) of his $50,000 bail. Wesley Anderson was ordered to refrain from owning animals, possessing firearms, or taking drugs or alcohol while free on bond.

Anderson’s next scheduled court date is Tuesday, March 12, 2019.
