Facebook Has Disrupted Services Again; This Time the Morning After a Bomb Threat at Menlo Park Campus

Facebook experienced another disruption in services for much of the day on Wednesday. Downdetector.com reported Wednesday December 12, 2018 that issues have been occurring since 8:24 a.m. ET / 9:24 a.m. CT.

The Facebook outage is impacting logging in, posting, and connecting Facebook Pages and Groups. People reported experiencing a variety of problems over a range of disrupted services.

One user posting on downdetector.com’s message board said “i keep getting the “invalid app id” error!” People that use Hootsuite have reported that older posts have disappeared, and that they are not capable of submitting new posts. Another person report their timeline is not loading. The majority of people reported their business page is not loading. Problems were reported from users in the United States, Poland, Croatia and more.

On Tuesday night December 11, 2018, a building at 200 Jefferson Drive on Facebook’s Menlo Park campus was evacuated after a report of a bomb threat. Both Instagram and Facebook employees work at the building.

Menlo Park police confirmed on Twitter that its bomb squad was on the scene and conducted a search of the building. Menlo Park Police Department reported they did not find any explosives or suspicious packages. The bomb threat, which was initially called in by the New York Police Department’s Crime Stopper unit, was relayed to the Menlo Park Police Department. Some buildings in the immediate area were evacuated, but workers in other buildings on Facebook’s campus were not evacuated last night.

Concerns about safety and security risk management have increased at tech campuses in the Bay Area since the shooting at Google/YouTube’s San Bruno campus in April 2018.
