Police responded to the scene to investigate the report of a murder, and within minutes of their arrival reported shots fired — apparently by the police. Palatine police report that when officers arrived on scene and were standing outside speaking with a local resident, a vehicle in the parking lot appears to have been intentionally driven at a high rate of speed toward the officers. The vehicle drove off of the pavement and onto the grass, striking the local resident and one of the officers.

The officer struck by the vehicle was able to discharge his firearm, striking the driver multiple times. According to Palatine Police Department, the offender’s vehicle came to rest against 308 N. Brockway Street, a multi-residence building. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Pursuant to the initial 9-1-1 call, officers began checking residential units and discovered a deceased female in one of the apartments. The civilian and the officer struck by the vehicle were treated by Palatine Fire Department Paramedics and transported to an area hospital. At this early point in the investigation, the driver of the vehicle and the deceased female appear to be related, according to Palatine Police Department. Police officers are confident that there is no threat to the community as a result of this incident.

The Cook County Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) will conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting and will assist Palatine Police Investigators with the investigation into the death of the woman.

At least one man was observed to be dead outside in front of the apartment building at the scene. The body outside was located just to the right of a Chevy sedan that appeared to have crashed into the apartment building door of the east side of the apartment building. An address sign on the building displayed a Brockway Court address where a circle drive is located just west of Brockway Street and just north of Richmond Street.

Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and two people were transported by paramedics from the scene. At least one of the victim’s transported did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.

Police officers are also transported to a hospital for observation as a precaution as part of standard operating procedures when there is an officer-involved shooting.
